888 celebrates birthday with charity day

The Prize Money
Poker players at 888.com's Pacific Poker can donate part of their playing money to charity Oct. 10.

Usually birthdays mean getting something good, but 888 has decided to celebrate its 10th birthday this year by helping give something instead.

On Oct. 10, the online gambling site will host a charity day during which it has pledged to contribute $100,000 and will allow players the opportunity to donate a percentage of their playing money to two charity organizations.

The two charities are Earth Action and World for World. Earth Action is an organization working to mobilize people around the world to press their governments or corporations for stronger action to solve global problems.

The organization's network already includes more than 1,900 citizen groups in 161 countries, two-thirds of them in developing countries.

The World for World Organization is a non-governmental organization based and operating in Italy and internationally that works to increase public awareness about global development issues.

888.com's employees will be participating in special activities to raise awareness of the two charities.

Players at the online gambling site, both in the casino or at Pacific Poker, can choose to donate to either charity, or both if they prefer. All they have to do is play their favorite games on the site Oct. 10 and pledge a percentage to charity.

"This is the first time we have run a global charity day, and we're delighted we can raise money for such important causes," said Matt Robinson, 888.com marketing director.

"It's a great opportunity for all of our players to work with us in contributing to important global issues - simply by playing and enjoying our games."

Players can also make separate donations directly at the charities' Web sites.
