Review

Two Plus Two is renowned for publishing cutting-edge poker strategy books. Professional No-Limit Hold'em Vol. 1 fits that mold. Its goal is to change the way you think about playing poker.

The authors' main message is that it is vitally important to plot out your hand. You want to have it delineated before you even put a penny in the pot, and they instruct you on how to do that.

The authors, much like your partner, want you to make a "commitment plan." When you have properly planned out your hand and decided if you are committed, you can avoid those paralyzing decisions that spring up in the course of a poker game.

This book does not deal with huge post-flop decisions. It gives you the information that you need so you can properly plan your hand to simplify these decisions.

Some of the key tips it imparts are how to size your bets, manage the pot, manipulate opponents, know when to go all-in and even avoid big mistakes.

Will this book make you a winner? In and of itself, probably not. This book, like most others from 2+2, is not a beginner's manual. You'll definitely want to check out the basic books first before you pick this one up, or you will be overwhelmed and, frankly, unable to understand the principles used in this book.

However, Professional No-Limit Hold'em Vol. 1 is an excellent mid-level book for players who have the fundamentals down and significant poker experience under their belts. Players fitting this description who pick up the book will find their game catapulted into the next level.
