2008 WSOP Day 38: Main Event final Day 1 begins

By Sarah Polson

Day 1c of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event brought out 1,928 poker players, making it the biggest Day 1 of the Main Event so far.

That bring the Main Event up to 4,383 players so far, but there is still one more Day 1 left to play before a final total can be tallied for the 2008 WSOP Main Event. Day 1d got under way at noon today, and its official count won't be released until registration closes after two levels of play.

While they're getting going, let's take a look at how Day 1c finished off. A few former World Champions chose Day 1c to get their start in the Main Event. Brad Daugherty, Jim Bechtel, Huck Seed, Chris Moneymaker and Joe Hachem were all in the mix.

Unfortunately for Seed, he only lasted about 17 minutes into the day. That earned him the somewhat ignominious record for fastest bust-out of a former World Champion so far. Bechtel also busted on Day 1c.

The World Champions who have survived their Day 1's are Daugherty, Moneymaker, Hachem, Scotty Nguyen and Robert Varkonyi.

Other players among the 1,026 who survived Day 1c include David Singer, Brad Booth, Evelyn Ng, Nenad Medic, Brian Townsend, Liz Lieu, Rolf Slotboom, Mike Matusow, Minh Nguyen, Bertrand Grospellier, Bill Chen, Matt Graham, Mike Binger, Eric Lynch, Clonie Gowen, Lacey Jones, Mel Judah and more.

The chip leader coming out of Day 1c is Henning Granstad from Oslo, Norway. He finished the day with $249,950 in chips. His total tops the chip leaders from Day 1a and Day 1b, making Granstad the current overall chip leader as well.

Of course, that could change today as the final Day 1 takes place. The numbers aren't out yet, but there have been plenty of stars who waited until the last day of Day 1s to take on the Main Event.

Chip and Karino Jett are there today, along with Victor Ramdin, Antonio Esfandiari, Steve Billirakis, Shane Schleger, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, Steve Dannenman, Ryan Daut, Mark Newhouse, Eskimo Clark, Hevad Khan, Phil Ivey, Scott Clements, Johnny Chan, Jean-Robert Bellande, Phil Hellmuth, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Carlos Mortensen, Barbara Enright, Chris Ferguson and many more.

All those players are still in it, but there are more than a few well-known pros who also showed up today and have already headed home.

Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Raymond Davis, David Williams, Joe Pelton, Tim Vance, Jose Conseco, Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffen were also in the house for some poker but busted out.
