2008 WSOP Day 23: Rocco, the Money Man

By: Sean Lind

Only one new event is getting started today at the WSOP, with one new bracelet winner last night, and another two pieces of jewelery to be won today.

Event 35

The $1,500 Seven-Card Stud event came to a close late last night with some heads-up domination by our winner Michael Rocco. Upon sitting down to heads-up, runner-up Al Barbieri announced, "I'm making a statement right now. If you don't end it in 15 hands or less we're going to be here for a long time!"

Rocco took this advice to heart and took down the win in half as many hands dealt. Here are the key hands, taken from the play-by-play in our live updates section.

The Crippler

On the sixth or seventh hand after returning from break, Rocco brought it in with the Q 4 and Barbieri popped it with the 9. Barbieri stayed in the driver's seat until all the up cards were on the felt, leaving the board thus:

Barbieri: (X-X)9 A 7 9

Rocco: (X-X)4 7 J 2

Barbieri bet and Rocco raised. Barbieri called and tossed in a blind bet on seventh street. Rocco raised and Barbieri made a crying call. Rocco tabled 5 3 for the straight and Barbieri mucked in disgust.

The Death Blow

Left with only $40,000 or so, Barbieri was all-in on the next hand with 3 to Rocco's 7. The dealer ran it and after all the cards were out, Rocco had done it. Long story short, he made a pair of kings on seventh street, which was good against Barbieri's pair of treys.

Event 36

Event 36, another $1500 NL Hold'em tourney with close to 2,500 players, has played down to a final table. Unlike many of the final tables of this year's WSOP, due to other tournaments taking precedence to this one, there are no big names pros at the felt here. (They're all playing other events, such as the World Championship O8.)

1 Jesper Hougaard $1,582,000
2 Cody Slaubaugh $1,419,000
3 Danny Wong $1,105,000
4 Rick Solis $900,000
5 Justin Wald $873,000
6 Owen Crowe $674,000
7 Doug Middleton $356,000
8 John Shipley $269,000
9 Aaron Kanter $165,000

Play will start up again on the fight for a new champion at 2 p.m. Vegas time. Our Live Updates section will keep you covered with reports on all the action.
