Review
Glancing at the poker section of your local bookstore, you might think that the Texas Hold'em is all there is to play in the poker world. Most books being published these days deal with the most popular version of poker being played, but 1000 Best Poker Strategies and Secrets by Susie Isaacs goes beyond Hold'em to also help players improve their Seven-Card Stud, Razz, Omaha, Five Card Draw Jacks-or-Better and more.
On top of that, the book also has a poker glossary, a section for Internet play, table etiquette and tips from the pros. There really is advice on pretty much any area of poker you might be curious about.
Best of all the sections on the poker games is organized so you can read the tips for your play level in the game you're interested in. For instance, the Limit Hold'em chapter is section into beginner, intermediate and advanced player advice.
You'd never know that by just glancing at the book though. It would be more helpful for readers if the sections were included in the Table of Contents as well so players can more-easily flip to the section they want rather than going to the game they want and then having to flip through until they find their player level.
The advice is also broken down into 1,000 tips (more than 400 of them are Texas Hold'em tips) making the book simple to read and put down and pick up where you left off later. However, not all the tips can be read individually so you can't just flip the book open to read tips randomly. Some of them must be read with the preceding or following tips to get the full meaning.
In all, though, the advice is solid and the book is an easy read making it a good way to help your game along. An added bonus is the section at the end with information about a few pros Susie Isaacs knows and some advice they give potential pro players.
One piece of advice from Greg Raymer seems particularly applicable in a poker world filled with a boom of books on the subject:
"Don't just buy and zip through a poker book. Buy the best poker books and really study them. Spend lots of time on each page, and really think about all the aspects of what the author is saying. There is no cheaper way to learn how to play better."
